Stuttgart is the centre of Germany's car and engineering industry, and many newcomers arrive for jobs at large employers. The city sits in a valley, so expect hills and steps.
Arriving
Stuttgart Airport is south of the city. S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 reach the Hauptbahnhof in about 27 minutes. The U6 Stadtbahn also serves the airport.
Getting around
VVS covers the SSB Stadtbahn (light rail), buses and the S-Bahn with one ticket system.
- The €63 Deutschlandticket covers the whole network.
- Most universities include the Deutschland-Semesterticket in the semester fee. Check yours before you buy a ticket.
- Some Stadtbahn lines climb steep hills; the Zahnradbahn rack railway is part of the network too.
Registering your address
You register at a Bürgerbüro. The larger offices book appointments online, and registration appointments are often scarce, so book as soon as you know your move-in date.

Stuttgart's rents are high for a city of its size. WG rooms were commonly advertised at around €560 a month in 2026. The valley location limits building land, so the supply is tight.
- Vaihingen, around the university's main campus, has many student flats and halls.
- Towns along the S-Bahn lines, such as Esslingen and Ludwigsburg, are cheaper and well connected.
Neighbourhoods
Stuttgart-West
Dense, lively, with cafés and old buildings, popular with young professionals.
Stuttgart-Süd
Around Marienplatz, residential, good Stadtbahn links.
Bad Cannstatt
East of the Neckar, more affordable, known for the spring and autumn festivals.
Vaihingen
Around the University of Stuttgart's main campus, many student residences.
Stuttgart-Ost
Mixed and residential, a little cheaper than West and Süd.
Help for newcomers
The Welcome Center Stuttgart combines the immigration office with advice for new residents. The Welcome Service Region Stuttgart helps skilled workers and employers across the wider region.
