Munich has more jobs and higher salaries than most German cities, and the highest rents. Housing is the step to start earliest.
Arriving
Munich Airport is north-east of the city. S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 reach the Hauptbahnhof in about 40 to 45 minutes. A Deutschlandticket covers them; otherwise buy a ticket that includes the airport zone.
Getting around
MVG runs the U-Bahn, trams and buses in the city; the S-Bahn is run by Deutsche Bahn. All use MVV tickets and zones. Zone M covers the city.
- The €63 Deutschlandticket covers the whole network.
- Most universities include the Deutschland-Semesterticket in the semester fee. Check yours before you buy a ticket.
- The city is flat and compact enough for cycling most of the year.
Registering your address
Munich lets you register your main residence online. Otherwise, book an appointment at one of the KVR's Bürgerbüros; the central one is at Ruppertstraße 19. Expect several weeks' lead time for an appointment.

Go to City of Munich- The online registration needs a German ID card, an electronic residence permit or another ID with the online ID function. A passport alone isn't enough, so most newcomers book an appointment.
- Book as soon as you have a confirmed move-in date.

HomeSettled tells you what to bring to your Munich Bürgeramt appointment and checks your documents before you go.
Immigration office
Munich's immigration office is part of the KVR. Its Service Office for Immigration and Citizenship takes many applications online. Skilled workers and Blue Card holders are handled by a dedicated service for international professionals, which you can contact before you arrive.
