Leipzig is one of Germany's fastest-growing cities and one of the cheapest large ones to rent in. Berlin is about an hour away by ICE, and many international flights arrive at Berlin BER instead of Leipzig/Halle.
Arriving
Leipzig/Halle Airport has an S-Bahn station. Lines S5 and S5X reach Leipzig Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, every 30 minutes. If you land at Berlin BER, the ICE from Berlin Hauptbahnhof takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Getting around
LVB runs the trams and buses; the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland connects the city with Halle and the region. All use MDV tickets.
- The €63 Deutschlandticket covers the whole network.
- Most universities include the Deutschland-Semesterticket in the semester fee. Check yours before you buy a ticket.
- The city is flat and cycling is common.
Registering your address
Leipzig has twelve Bürgerbüros. New appointments are released every day at 5 pm (except Sundays), up to two weeks ahead, and some offices take walk-ins in the morning.

Leipzig is much cheaper than Berlin, Munich or Hamburg. WG rooms were commonly advertised for well under €500 a month in 2026, though prices are rising as the city grows.
- Student halls are run by the Studierendenwerk Leipzig.
- Unrenovated flats in older buildings are the cheapest option but may need work.
