In most rented flats, electricity isn't included in the rent. Check your contract: if the Warmmiete doesn't mention electricity, you need your own contract with a supplier. Gas is the same if your flat has its own gas heating or boiler.
The default tariff
If you move in and use electricity without choosing a supplier, the local default supplier (Grundversorger) bills you under its standard tariff (Grundversorgung). It's legal and reliable, but usually noticeably more expensive than other tariffs. You can leave it with two weeks' notice.
What to do
- 1
Read the meter on move-in day
Photograph the meter with its number and reading. Write both on the handover report too.
- 2
Choose a supplier
Compare tariffs for your postcode and expected use. A single person uses around 1,500 to 2,000 kWh a year.
- 3
Sign up with the move-in date
Give the meter number and reading. The new supplier handles the rest, including leaving the default tariff.
